James Backman, a geophysicist at Chevron Overseas Petroleum Incorporated for 31 years, died Thursday at home in Pleasant Hill. He was 57.

The native of Santa Ana lived in Pleasant Hill for eight years. He was a member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. He enjoyed gardening and building.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Angela Campbell Backman of Pleasant Hill; son, Mark A. Backman of Rancho Cordova; and sister, Cherine Young of Escalon.

Services: 7 p.m. funeral liturgy Sunday at St. Monica's Catholic Church in Moraga, with 10 a.m. burial Monday at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette. Arrangements by Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel in Walnut Creek.
