Melissa Ann (Kuykendall) Pennington, 24, of HC 76, Box 760, Mount Storm, W.Va., died Friday, March 31, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Cumberland, Md., as the result of an accident on Rt. 50, east of Burlington, W.Va.
Born January 12, 1982, in Cumberland, she was a daughter of Jeffrey L. Kuykendall, Sr. of Keyser, W.Va., and Dawn M. (Tranum) Parsons and stepdaughter of Karl L. Parsons, both of Brandywine, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Thomas L. Tranum, Jr., Dwight E. Hovis and Clifford Parsons, Sr.
Melissa was employed as a corrections counselor at the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail in Augusta, W.Va. She also was formerly employed with Perkins Restuarant in McHenry, Md., and had received special clearance with the FBI to work with the White Collar Crime Unit in Fairmont, W.Va.
She was a 2000 graduate of Southern High School in Oakland, Md., attended Potomac State College in Keyser for two years and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Fairmont State College in 2005 with degrees in criminal pyschology and criminal justice.
Throughout her entire high school and college careers, Melissa was very active in sports of all kinds, but academics were her priority, being named to the honor rolls, Dean's Lists and President's Lists every grading period.
In addition to being named to the All-Conference volleyball and softball teams her sophomore year at Potomac State, she was named at age 13 to the Who's Who Society of Distinguished American High School Students, and during her studies at Potomac State was named to the Society of Distinguished American Junior College Students. In her youth, she attended the Fountain United Brethren in Christ Church, Keyser, and more recently attended the Terra Alta Wesleyan Church in Terra Alta, W.Va., and the Bayard Church of God in Bayard, W.Va.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, is her husband, Michael Wayne Pennington; her beloved pet, Nibbles; a brother, Jeffrey L. Kuykendall, II, formerly of Keyser, currently stationed with the U.S. Army at Fort Shafter in Honolulu, Hawaii; a sister, Katherine V. "Katie" Kuykendall, formerly of Keyser, currently of Brandywine; grandparents, Nellie and Ward Ashby of Oakland, Gene Kuykendall of Keyser, Margaret and Gerald Oliver of Martinsburg, W.Va., Bette Tranum-Mallow of Keyser, and Joy Parsons of Loch Lynn, Md.
Also surviving is a great-grandmother, Nellie Rogers of Keyser; her father and mother-in-law, Terry and Joyce Pennington of Mount Storm; a brother-in-law, Terry Pennington, III and his wife, Lori, of Mount Storm; two grandmothers-in-law, Nancy Warnick of Grantsville, Md., and Annie Ray of Abingdon, Md.; and numerous aunts, uncles, great aunts and uncles, a great-great aunt and uncle and many cousins.
As a last and loving gift to others, Melissa was an organ donor, and through that gift, at least three other individuals have been given the opportunity to live a fuller, more enriched life.
