When I came to the Chorale in 1994, broken, depressed and stunned at the loss of someone I loved, it was Kurt who hugged me and said "Welcome to your new family!" And that's what we were, sharing all the joys and sorrows, laughter and tears that families share. Kurt's presence seemed to be the glue that held us together; the wind beneath our wings.
Over the years we sang far too many memorial services for those we loved. But when we lost Kurt, it was the hardest of all - for me at least - and I know for many others too. The songs we sang for him: "The Awakening" and "Sing Me To Heaven" were Kurt's own choices, which he e-mailed to me shortly before he left us. The church was filled, and a great many people spoke about his impact on their lives. Many past singers attended, and several who knew the anthems came up and sang them with us.
We dedicated our next concert to him at Christmas time that year, SOUTHWEST SEASONINGS. Two full pages of the concert program were dedicated to his memory. One of them is shown here, with a sketch of Kurt done by one of our members.
For several weeks we left his chair vacant, in the middle of the back row. We all knew no one could take his place.
To quote my favorite anthem:
"Love lives on beyond goodbye
The truth of us will never die
Our spirits will shine long after we're gone, And so our love lives on........"
We miss you Kurt!
