Archie Dean Swift Jr. was born on December 21, 1914 at Elk County General Hospital, Ridgway, Elk County, Pennsylvania Archie Dean Swift Sr. and Bernice Maude Thompson.

Archie attended Haverford School where he played for the institution's baseball and basketball team. After graduating, he attended Princeton University where he was a member of the Glee Club, Key Club, and Seal Club; assistant manager of the gym team; varsity member of the lacrosse team; and a member of the class basketball and hockey team. It was here that he earned the nicknames: Swifty, Reds, and Whity. He left Princeton in his junior year to pursue a career in banking at the Central Pennsylvania National Bank in Philadelphia.

On May 3, 1938, Archie enlisted as a Private in the United States Marine Corps. By the time he left in 1953, Archie had attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

After marrying and divorcing Barbara Newton Godley, Archie married Rose Baldi Douglas on March 21, 1942 in Roxboro, Pennsylvania. The couple had three children: Archie Dean Swift III, Douglas Baldi Swift, and Scott Kingsley Swift (father of singer, Taylor Alison Swift).

Archie died on September 2, 1998 in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, at the age 83.
