Arlene Frances Ashley was called to heaven on March 17, 2006 after a battle with lung cancer. She was born in Kalamazoo on August 29, 1934 the third of five children born to Arthur and Evelyn (Meisterheim) Merchant. She had two older and two younger brothers. She and her three older daughters met James Ashley and were married on March 5, 1960, and in 1961, Jim and Arlene added three more children, two born on New Years Day and the last one in December. Arlene and Jim were married for 46 happy years and lived all that time in the Climax-Scotts area. Arlene leaves behind a loving husband, James M. Ashley; six children, Evalyn (Duane) Soderquist of Portage, Carla Dinstett of Kalamazoo, Robin Carter of Kalamazoo, Michael Ashley of Scotts, Patricia (Rick) Eager of Scotts and James M. (Joyce) Ashley of Scotts; 20 grand and great grandchildren; one brother, Carl (Kathy) Merchant; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 AM Tuesday in the Climax United Methodist Church, 133 E. Maple St., with Pastor Dave Knapp officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday beginning at 10:30AM until service time. Memorials may be directed to the family.
