Born the only daughter of Ann (Cookson) and John Wordsworth, Dorothy was a writer of diaries, poems, and short stories. Never married, she devoted her life to her brother, the famous Romantic poet, William Wordsworth. Her diaries, most notably The Alfoxden and Grasmere journals, draw an intimate portrait of the Wordsworths' lives. Her journals are peopled by their close friends Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey, as well as Robert Burns and Thomas DeQuincey, all literary giants. Her writings served, at times, as an inspiration for William, and he mentioned her in poems, such as "Lines Written Above Tintern Abbey".
