Sergeant Joseph Cournoyer was a member of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC.

Circumstance: One of two suspects who robbed a Murray's Steaks store boarded a Metro Bus to escape. Sergeant Cournoyer observed the suspect on the bus and escorted him off for identification purposes. The suspect, Sylvester King, fought Sergeant Cournoyer, drew a gun, and shot Joe once in the chest. The suspect and his accomplices were later captured and successfully prosecuted.

I knew Joe well. He was a fine man and an excellent police officer.

A funeral will be held tomorrow for Sgt. Joseph Cournoyer , 30, of 6612 Powhatan Street, a Washington, D.C., policeman, who died Tuesday of gunshot wounds received while he was making an arrest about 8 p.m. in Washington.

He was shot at close range by a man he was arresting.

Born in Providence, a son of Yvon Cournoyer of Pawtucket, and the late Rita (Devitt) Cournoyer , he grew up in Pawtucket and attended local schools. He lived in Riverdale for the past three years. He previously lived in Hyattsville, Maryland.

Sergeant Cournoyer joined the Washington Police Department six years ago, and was promoted to sergeant a month ago.

Besides his father he leaves his wife, Darlene (Johnson) Cournoyer ; two brothers, Mark Cournoyer of Pawtucket, Paul Cournoyer of Chico, California, and four sisters, Mary Cournoyer of Pawtucket, Elaine Cournoyer of Denver, Colo., Claire Pollard of Cucamonga, California, and Suzanne Lewis of Stow, Massachusetts.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard's Church, Riverdale. Burial will be in Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Brentwood.
