"Kate" was the wife of Ebenezer Harris, whom she married December 4, 1872 in Sullivan County, Indiana.

Mother of Maude Preston Harris McConnell, Mary Alice Harris Barnett, John Lyman Harris and Angie Virginia Harris Suffridge.

The 1900 census states that Kate was the mother of six children, with four living at the time of the census which would be those listed above. It is unknown when the other two were born/died or which husband was the father.

Kate's first husband was Benjamin N. Collings, son of Archibald and Susan, nee Ware, Collings of Shelby County, Kentucky and the brother of Vigo County physician, Dr. William O. Collings. Kate and Benjamin were married in Vigo County on 2 September 1862. Benjamin (a student of medicine) and Dr. Collings were listed in the 1860 census, living with the Elijah Pound family.

The story told to me was that Benjamin was outspoken about his Civil War related political views. They had been married but a year when he was murdered on 4 September 1863 - shot from his horse on a country road in Vigo County. Update ~ based on a newspaper article found by another contributor, the mystery of the circumstances surrounding Benjamin's death is cleared up.

Kate was the daughter of Reason and Rebecca, nee Stewart, Bennett. They settled in Vigo County with some of their children and were from Spencer County, Kentucky. Since I cannot locate her parents' burial sites, here are links to her siblings that have memorials:

Preston A. Bennett
Urith Ellen Bennett Roll
Caroline Amelia Bennett Bennett
Mary Bennett Ferguson Krauchi
