He mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 26 as a private with Co. K, Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865. The roster also shows his enlistment age as twenty-six, which is an obvious clerical error.
He married Kate E. Gipple and fathered Samuel Calvin (b. 03/01/69, d. 01/25/78) and Bertha Mary "Mamie" (b. 07/17/75 - married Jacob Otto Warfield, Luther Reichard, and Samuel Carl). Cause of his death is listed as "pneumonia," a complication of a "cold."
