L. L. Martin

Services for L. L. Martin, one of Iowa's real pioneer sons, were held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the M. E. church in Woodburn with F. C. McCallon officiating. Burial in the Woodburn cemetery.

Mr. Martin came to Iowa with his parents in 1859 and to Clarke county in 1881. He was one of the most highly respected and honored citizens of the county and his passing Sunday at the age of 84 years, was a source of sorrow to scores who have known him for many years.

Levi Line Martin, son of David H. and Sarah Line Martin, was born August 4, 1854, at Marion, Grant county, Indiana, and departed this life February 12, 1939, at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 8 days.

At the age of five he came with his parents to Centerville, Iowa, later moving to Eddyville, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. On March 4, 1881, he moved to Clarke county, and settled on forty acres on the Lucas county line.

In his parental home he was the second child of a family of ten children. Three brothers, C. L. Martin aged eighty-six, of Kirkland, Washington; J. U. Martin of La Cygne, Kansas; W. E. Martin of Portland, Oregon; and one sister, Mrs. Myra McElvaine of San Francisco, Caif., still survive. Four brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

On December 11, 1873, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Bennett. To this union were born five children, Earl L. and Robert B. of Des Moines, Iowa, Ola M. Woods of Long Beach, California, Mary M. Wilson of Springfield, Missouri, and Jetti V. Martin of Woodburn, Iowa. Also fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

On June 22, 1919, he devoted companion departed this life. On December 8, 1920, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Sipes of Eddyville, Iowa.

The pall bearers were seven grandsons and one grand son-in-law.
