Samuel Dean (1803 – March 20, 1876): Third son of Samuel F. Dean and Martha Kemp. He was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He took for himself a bride named Catherine (Kate) Leighty, the daughter of Marks Leighty of Buck County, Pennsylvania, and Barbara Snyder of Westmoreland County of the same state. Kate was born in 1805 in Fayette County and married Samuel Dean there in 1828. Samuel and Kate were blessed with ten children all born in Wharton Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania:

1. George Washington (August 22, 1829 – March 24, 1909) m. Mary Margaret Spaw
2. Henry Clay (1832 – November 22, 1863) never married, died in the Civil War in South Carolina
3. John Wesley (1834 – Civil War)
4. William Harrison (June 1837-after1880) m. Alice
5. Mary Ellen (March 1838-after 1900) m. James Rose
6. Jacob (1840 - November 11, 1863) never married, died in the Civil War from a Brain Concussion by a Locomotive
7. Rachel A. (April 9, 1843 - January 11, 1924) m. John Little and divorced after one child.
8. Zedadiah (April 1847- 1902) m. Margaret Shipley
9. Catharine J. (1848 -before 1880)
10. Samuel (1851- before 1880) "Insane" in 1870 census

They lost three sons Henry Clay, John Wesley, and Jacob Dean in the Union Army in the War. Son, Henry, was buried at Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary Street Beaufort, SC 29902, in: Section 37 Site 4239. Jacob Dean suffered a Brain Concussion when hit by a Locomotive on November 11, 1863. The third son was missing in action. The father, Samuel Dean, died in Fayette County, Pennsylvania in March 20,1875. Kate passed a year earlier on June 8, 1874, in Clarksville, Iowa.
