Lula B. Hawkins Baker, 82, of Crossett died Sunday, February 15, 2004. Born on May 5, 1921, in the Cooter community to William and Priscilla Simpson Hawkins, she met and married John Thomas Baker, Jr., in 1967. They enjoyed traveling and attending African Methodist Episcopal church functions. She was a member of the Gates Chapel A. M. E. Church and its gospel choir, Bells of Joy, Class #10, and Stewardess Board #1 and a member of the Silver Star Chapter #306, Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by one son, William Gilbert; one daughter Dorothy Gilbert Davis and husband Ray of Crossett; three grandchildren, Tony Newton of Dallas, TX, Gale and husband Steve Williams of Fairfield, CA, and Breck Hall of Summit, IL; two great-grandchildren, Qiana and Donnie Newton, both of Oakland, CA: one great-great-granddaughter, Jiana Newton Lewis of Oakland; and two god-children, Bernard and Marjorie Martin of Crossett; and many other friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Friday, February 20, in the Gates Chapel A. M. E. Church with Rev. T. A. Broomfield officiating.

Pallbearers were Preston, Clifton, Willie, Eddie, Johnny and Eddie Jr. Hawkins. Honorary pallbearers were the stewardesses of Gates Chapel and members of the Silver Star Chapter #306.

Burial followed services at the Westview Cemetery with arrangements by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
