Nora Auric, described by many as "a Russian beauty," was a watercolorist and portraitist active in Paris from the 1930s through the 1970s.
In 1938, she designed the sets and costumes for Darius Milhaud's opera-bouffe "Esther de Carpentras," which premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris.
Her most famous portrait is of fashion mogul Christian Dior, completed in 1953. In 1966, Auric was approached to do a portrait of famed soprano Maria Callas, but turned down the offer, saying, "J’aurais adoré faire le portrait de La Callas mais ce n’est pas possible : j’aurais trop peur qu’Onassis croie que j’attends son chèque." (I would have loved to do the portrait of Callas, but it's not possible: I would be scared that [Aristotle] Onassis would think that I'm only doing it for his money.)
Several expositions of her work were held in the 1960s at the Galerie Lucie Weill in Paris. Those of 1966 and 1968 were the most publicized and successful.
She married composer Georges Auric in 1930 and is buried with him in the Cimitière Montparnasse. (Her name does not appear on the grave.)
