Johann came to US in 1824 arriving in Philadelphia where he married. He worked for several years for the Horstman's manufacturers of woven goods. (Excerpts from his obit in Wheeling Register)

John and 'Barbery' appear on the 1850 census, Wheeling, Ohio, Virginia before WV which indicates he is a weaver and with children William 16, Hannah 14 both born Pennsylvania; John 12, Lewis 8 and George 6. Two other weavers from Germany also in household.

He was a prominent German citizen of Wheeling, considered one of the oldest citizens and oldest member of William Tell Lodge of Odd Fellows.

Their son Lewis/Louis served in Civil War, Union, Private, enlisted in Company E, West Virginia 1st Infantry Regiment, 30 May 1861. Mustered out 27 Aug 1861 at Wheeling, VA/WV.
He was an accountant and moved to Boise, Idaho.

Their son John Jr. died August 19, 1870, may also be buried this cemetery. He had married Alice BRADLEY in 1865. Newspaper death report gives Aug 18 as death date. Alice Eckhart married John Edwin Hannon in 1896, Durango, Colorado. Her memorial is 34253228.
