Funeral service for Evelyn M. Barr, 85, Aberdeen is 10:30 am, Thursday, October 20, 2005 at Frederick United Methodist Church with Pastor Don Peck officiating. Burial will follow at Wayside Cemetery, Frederick. Evelyn died Monday, October 17, 2005 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Wednesday at Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 6th Ave. SE. with a prayer service at 7 and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Evelyn Mabel Harrington was born on January 10, 1920 in Brown County, SD to Fay and Nellie (Ashbaugh) Harrington. She grew up and attended school in Frederick, graduating from Frederick High School with the class of 1939.

Evelyn married Earl C. Barr on January 21, 1947 at Aberdeen, SD.

Evelyn worked for various grocery stores in Frederick. She then began working at the Frederick Post Office, where she worked for 31 years. Evelyn retired in 1974. Earl died July 20, 1990. Evelyn continued to live in Frederick until moving to Aberdeen in May of 2000. In January 2005, Evelyn moved to ManorCare Health Services.

Evelyn was an active member of First United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She enjoyed gardening and canning and especially loved flowers. She liked to play Bingo, attend church, and her coffee fellowship. Evelyn was an active participant from 1998 to 2005 in the Dash for Diabetes Walk-a-thon where she was honored for being the oldest participant to finish the walk. Evelyn enjoyed people, and many of them called her “smiley”. Most of all, Evelyn loved her family.

Grateful for having shared Evelyn’s life are her son, Rod (Kathy) Barr of Aberdeen, daughter, Alice Napton, Aberdeen, three grandchildren, Ryan (Tiffany) Barr, Kevin (Shelley Heitland) Barr and Sheila (David) Sandquist, four great grandchildren, Preston Barr, Spencer Barr, McKenzie Sandquist and Nikki Sandquist all of Aberdeen, one sister, Gladys (Gaylen) Olsen of Aberdeen.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, Fay and Nellie Harrington, husband, Earl Barr, grandson, Stewart Barr, five brothers, Earl Harrington, Verl Harrington, Lester Harrington, Ernie Harrington and Leslie Harrington.
