Inscription: RICHARD FOSTER | Born Dec 25th 1785. | Died Feb 1st 1868 | Age 83 Years 1 Mo. | 5 Days.
It is likely the death date reads 1785 but not certain. If one compares the five in 25 to this character it is very close. Dates on above do not calculate to 83 years, 1 month and 5 days.

There has been much confusion regarding the parents of Richard Singleton Foster and Elizabeth Mann Foster. They were second cousins. Richard is the son of Josiah Foster and Elizabeth is the daughter of George Foster and Sarah Wilkes. Sarah's mother was Elizabeth Mann who married Minor Wilkes. The confusion comes about because of a court case in 1835 and 1840 among the heirs of a William Wilkes. At this time in Tennessee law a woman had no standing in court and had to be represented by a man – father, husband, brother or friend. On the original court papers is a slip of paper stating that the children of George and Sarah Wilkes Foster are William, Benjamin and Elizabeth.

From a biological basis, Richard was born 15 Aug 1784 and George and Sarah were married 29 Sep 1785. I have a wonderful document written by the late Henry Ashcroft that is about 30 pages tracing his ancestor Margaret Singleton Foster – Richard's first child back to a Robert Foster in 1651 in Essex County VA.
