He was born in Fredrick Township near Rushville, IL to Loren and Gladys Mae Freiley Herren.
Surviving are one brother, two sisters, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his half brother, Loren Lee Herren.
He graduated from Abingdon High School and attended the University of Illinois, where he was a member of the ROTC. The ROTC was activated for the Korean Conflict, while serving there in the Air Force, he became a disabled veteran. He received the National Defense Service Medal.
Virgel was institutionalized the remainder of his lifetime. While in College he received two congressional appointments, one to West Point Military Academy and one the US Air Force Academy.
Graveside service was at the Abingdon Cemetery. Rev. Ron Scarlett officiated. There was no visitation.
Memorials were made to Boy Scout Troop 242.
