Helen M. Cole, 84, former Valparaiso University professor, died Saturday in Westchester, Ill.
She was born Jan. 29, 1898 in South Dakota, the daughter of Gottlieb and Anna (Pfeifer) Mechtle. On June 5, 1937, she married Hugh Cole who died in 1942.
She was retired from Valparaiso University, where she was a member of the foreign languages faculty until 1968. She received a master's degree from Middlebury College in Vermont and Ph.D from the University of Chicago.
She was named in the 1965 edition of Who's Who in American Women and the 1966 edition of International Biography. She was a former member of the Indiana Teachers of French and the Modern Language Association.
Survivors include a daughter, Eunice "Marilyn" Schmidt of Illinois; a stepson, William Cole of Pennsylvania; and a grandchild.
Services 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Valparaiso, where she was a member; the Rev. Allen Campbell officiating; burial Graceland Cemetery; visitation 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church; Wetmore-Moeller Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
