Environmentalist. Born Timothy Dexter, he spent 13 seasons in Alaska's Katmai National Park studying and photographing the coastal brown bears of North America. He was the founder of "Grizzly People" a non profit organization dedicated to the preservation and protection of grizzly bear wilderness habitat. In 1997 he co-authorized the book "Among Grizzlies: Living with Wild Bears in Alaska" which brought him celebrity status. His resulting fame earned him guest appearances on David Letterman's "Late Show," "Dateline NBC," and the Discovery Channel's "Discovery Sunday." His extreme close-up encounters with bears brought him into numerous heated confrontations with authorities of the National Park Service over his dangerous actions, which included swimming in close proximity with wild grizzlies and attempting to physically touch them. He was killed along with his 37 year old girlfriend Amie Huguenard following a fatal bear attack and mauling in an area known as the "Grizzly Maze" located in the remote area of Kaflia Bay. Their remains were discovered the following morning by a pilot flying over the campsite. In 2005 the documentary "Grizzly Man" was released to theaters depicting the last years of Treadwell's life. The documentary included video recordings from nearly 100 hours of film footage taken by Treadwell featuring North American brown bears and other local native wildlife.
