One of two brothers who emigrated from Scotland in 1742. His brother, James Bowie, never married and died in 1787, leaving large properties. John Bowie was wealthy man who devoted his time to supervising his numerous slaves and his large estate, "The Hill." He married, 1745, Judith Catlett, daughter of John Catlett. A sister of the latter was the grandmother of President James Madison. John Bowie and his wife Judith are buried side by side at the plantation, "The Hill." The settlement of his estate was said to be very large, consisting of forty slaves; much stock; money in bonds; silverware, etc. When his eldest daughter married in 1765, upon her marriage, a tract of land valued at three thousand five hundred dollars was given to her.
