Mary was the daughter of Jacob and Mary Shirk Leathers. The Schenck, Leathers and Bechdel (Beachdel) (Bechtel) families originally from Paradise and Dover and Manheim Townships in York County Pennsylvania. Her sister Elizabeth married Jacob Bechtel (Bechdel)and brother of Christian and relocated first to Venango County Pa then to Fairfield Ohio.
Mary and Christian were married about 1803 and raised a family of thirteen children.
