Four years later, he returned to baseball with the Philadelphia Phillies then traded back to the Giants. There he played unitl 1913 and a member of two Giants teams that played in the World Series. Both teams lost in 1912 and the following year 1913. In 1908, McCormick was involved in the famous "Merkle boner" game against the Chicago Cubs. He was the runner on third base and scored the "winning" run on the two-out single to centerfield. Firstbase runner Fred Merkle headed off to the clubhouse without touching second base once he crossed home plate. Merkle was called out when the second baseman tagged the base ending the game in a tie. The game was replayed at the end of the season and the Cubs went on to win the game, the pennant and the World Series that year.
