John A. Burleson, 89, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2006, in Austin. He was born on December 10, 1916, in Marlin, Texas to John Marvin and Lucile Alford Burleson. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He married his high school sweetheart, Jewel, spending 66 wonderful years together creating many cherished memories. John and Jewel traveled together and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
He was proud to have served his country in the United States Navy during World War II as a First Class Petty Officer on the USS Bright Destroyer Escort #747 in San Diego, California. John was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Cade- Rothwell Masonic Lodge #1151 in Houston. He sang as a professional Opera Singer in Houston and San Antonio and was the Lead Tenor at the grand opening of the Houston Music Hall. He retired from singing at age 50. After 42 years of working for The Texaco Company as an Oil Landman, he retired in 1976. Because of John's love of life and the desire to keep busy, he worked from 1977 to 1987 as an Oil Landman for the Houston Petroleum Company.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jewel on October 31, 2005. His family believes John longed for "the love of his life" so much that he passed away from a broken heart. Also preceding John in death are his parents and sister, Florine Rieniets.
He is survived by his loving family, brothers, Joe and Jim Burleson; sister, Lucile Below; daughters, Diana Lee Fleck and husband, Michael E., Sr., Jacquelyn Sue Lopez and husband, Jose M., Sr., Mary Lou Rich and husband, Geoffrey R.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives and a host of friends.
Even though John will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him, we take comfort in knowing that he is happy again to be with Jewel.
Visitation was Friday, February 3, 2006, at Cook-Walden/ Forest Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral Services were Saturday, February 4, 2006 in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with The Reverend Michael Killeen officiating.
