World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, he served as a Captain in the 1st Battalion, King's Liverpool Regiment, British Army. On the dates of March 8-10, 1917 at Diala River, Mesopotamia, Captain Reid was in command of a small post of troops on the opposite side of the river. After his lines of communication had been cut by the sinking of the pontoons, he maintained this position against constant enemy attacks of bombs, machine-gun and rifle fire. Even though himself wounded and with the full knowledge that repeated attempts at relief had failed and that his ammunition was all but exhausted, due to his tenacity the crossing of the river was effected the next night. For most prestigious gallantry, he was promoted Major and awarded the Victoria Cross on June 8, 1917.
