On October 26,1776 German troops under General Knyphausen (Hessian of Von Knyphausen Fusiliers)were on an advanced patrol on White Plains Road in Tuckahoe,Westchester County,New York.When the Hessians were attacked by American Militia unit under the command of Capt.Samual Crawford.When the action was over six Hessians were killed. The wounded where moved to St. Pauls Church being used as a field hospital by British forces. The dead where buried in a common grave later interned in the grave yard at St. Pauls church.The main body of Von Knyphausens army moved on up White Plains Road. The Hessian & British troops moved on to fight in the Battle of White Plains,N.Y. In the early 70's construction workers discovered the remains of some Hessians, and militia troops when adding storm drains on White Plains Road. The Hessians were reburied in a common grave in the St.Pauls Church Cemetery in Mt.Vernon,N.Y.The small head stone reads, Here lies six Hessian killed in Tuckahoe,1776.
