Dr. Mel Barrows served the Church of the Nazarene for over 40 years as a pastor and evangelist, serving as pastor in Brandon, Florida and Zephyrhills, Florida, as well as other Nazarene churches. He passed away Saturday while recovering from surgery, and entered into his Savior's presence. He is survived by his wife, Lillian, and daughter, Jenny Barrows-Oothoudt, husband Jeff (Sioux City, Iowa).

Mel was born in Grand Haven, Michigan. He was predeceased by his parents, Harvey(1964) and Mildred Barrows(1996). He had three brothers, Leonard, predeceased 2008 in Zephyrhills, Eugene N., predeceased 2011 from Zephyrhills, and Donald M., Romulus, Michigan. His sister is Donald's twin, Dona Cardenas, who lives in Mesa, Arizona.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on June 28, 1PM, at the Lake Gibson Church of the Nazarene, Lakeland, Florida.

Mel Barrows served in the US Air Force, taking his basic training in New York. He was a radio operator and became skilled at morse code. He logged hundreds of hours in a KC 97 Boeing tanker aircraft.

On their first date, Lil asked about his relationship with Christ and Mel soon accepted Christ. He attended Bethany Nazarene College (Southern Nazarene University) to study for the ministry. Lil became a school teacher.

His first ministries were in Ohio and Iowa. Following this they moved to Florida.

God's gift to Mel was his ability to pray and bring the Holy Spirit. Mel was baptized in the River Jordan. Mel had the gift of humor and laughter, and made everyone happier. Most importantly, Mel wanted everyone to have the salvation of Jesus Christ.

At the conclusion of his Life Celebration service, his family and friends sang Victory in Jesus. Think of Mel when you hear that song again.
