After her father remaried, the family story is that her stepmother put her and her sister Carrie out of the house. Carrie went to live with their sister Annie Mae Elmy Sutter's family in Glen Lyon before 1920 and "Annette" was put in "Retreat," the local mental hospital on 30 Jun 1920 [according to her death certificate she was in the institution for 5 mo 18 days] where she died. Retreat was also the Luzerne County "Alms" [Poor] House and included a medical hospital. While she suffered from Epilepsy, there is no indication of any mental disease or defect. Her niece Rhoda Sutter Rarick remembered visiting her there as a young girl and that she died when Rhoda was perhaps 4-5 years old. "Annette" died of Lobar Pneumonia in a time before antibiotics.
