Scientist. He was the Quaker ironmaster of Coalbrookedale, Shropshire, who paved the way for the Industrial Revolution by developing iron metallurgy with his employee, John Thomas. His grandson, Abraham (1750 to 1791), built the first cast-iron bridge, over the Severn at Coalbrookedale, in 1779.
