George Elton Wiles
Sept. 25, 1925 - May 19, 2011
84 year Resident of Concord

Beloved father of Lani Watkins (Greg) and Nikki Black (Walt); loving "Papa" to granchildren Kim Cole, Seth Watkins, Josh Watkins, Leah Lammers and Andrew Black. He was blessed with 17 great grandchildren and one on the way. George is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and cousins who held a special place in his heart.

He was preceded in death by his treasured wife of 64 years, Thelma Wiles; an infant son, George Alan Wiles; brother, Everett Wiles and grandson, Michael Watkins.

As an 84 year resident of Concord with an incredible memory, George was a great historian with many stories and recollections of days gone by. He and Thelma loved people, valued friendships and enjoyed traveling to visit friends and relatives near and far. He looked forward to frequent reunions with fellow graduates of Mt. Diablo High School. George was a member of the American Legion, the Concord Historical Society, the Native Sons of the Golden West for 43 years and was a 4-H leader through two generations.

After serving as a Seaman First Class in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII, George's love of photography turned into a career when he became an industrial photographer at Avon Refinery. He was a talented man who could build or fix almost anything and was always willing to lend a hand to a friend or neighbor who needed help with a project. George had a lifelong love of trains, large and small, and shared that hobby with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a farmer at heart who enjoyed gardening, raising livestock, chickens, game birds and could not sit down without one of his cats wanting to snuggle with him.
