Catherine Genevieve (Beard) Johns is my maternal grandmother, known to all of us as Nana. She seldom used the name Catherine, preferring to use the name Genevieve Regina (her confirmation name)...or simply Gen.

She and my grandfather Francis Johns were born and raised in New Jersey and were wed in March of 1920. Nine months to the day later, she gave birth to my mom, Elizabeth Marie on December 11, 1920 and on May 14, 1928 to her son Robert Donald.

When my mother was about 3 yrs old, they moved to Long Beach CA and four years later she had my uncle Robert Donald Johns.

Nana raised her family during the depression and my mother often told me that she was never quite sure how, but with what little they had, Nana always could put a meal together out of next to nothing, and make it a pleasant one at that.

I have so many wonderful memories of her because we spent a lot of time together. Nana LOVED her ice cream and my grandfather would tease her and say "your Nana can't see the television over her bowl of ice cream." She made root beer floats for us on Sundays and bread pudding when we were sick. We all loved her pound cake and usually requested it for a birthday cake.

In her later years I would fix her hair and paint her nails and she would laugh and say that she felt so glamourous that she wasn't going to feel like doing her housework. Believe me, there was never a time that her house wasn't spotless.

She was married to my grandfather for 46 yrs when he passed away. She lived for 10 more years and passed away peacefully one morning in her own little apartment of natural causes.

She was survived by her daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and William Meyer, her son and daughter-in-law Robert and Georgine Johns and 5 grandchildren, Judith, Jenelle and William Meyer and Robert B and Laurie Johns.

She was the peacemaker of the family and I miss her everyday.

Thank you to David, Amy, and Nathaniel *Compassion* for sponsoring my grandmother's grave. It was so kind of you. You are angels.
