Benjamin Orien Spence was the son of Benjamin James Spence and his second wife Luvenia Moore Spence. His father died 2 months before he was born. His mother married Robert Archer in 1897 and according to Ida Spence Babb, daughter of Benjamins sister Ellen Spence, the two step children were not well treated. Ellen married Richard Braswell in 1908 at the age of 15 and Benjamin went to live with them. He died in 1909 and was buried there in the Braswell family cemetery.
