George "Bud" Marvin Sommer, of Dixon, was born on March 2, 1933, at Harvey, Illinois, a son of Henry George and Frances Maletta (Zander) Sommer, and departed this life at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 13, 2014, in the St. Luke's Hospital, Chesterfield. George had been ill for the past two months and had attained the age of 81 years, 2 months and 11 days.
George was united in marriage on March 12, 1955, at Thornton, Illinois, to Neoma Bernice Warnol. He was preceded in death by his wife on May 19, 2008; one granddaughter, Megan Sommer on August 22, 1998; his father on February 2, 1979; his mother on June 30, 1968; one brother, Lionel Sommer and one sister, Laura Ford.
George accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior and followed him in baptism as a young man and at the time of his passing was a faithful member of the Seaton Faith Fellowship Church, Dixon. He loved to study the Bible and was a true Christian witness to all he met. During his working life, he was employed as a carpenter and was a member of the Carpenters Local No. 2298 for over 55 years. He and his wife, Neoma were the owners and operators of the OK Diner, Arlington for several years. George was a member of the Dixon Senior Center Kitchen Band and he enjoyed fishing, camping, and woodworking.
On February 27, 1952, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, George entered into active federal service in the Army of the United States and served until December 21, 1954, when he was honorably discharged at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. During his military career George was assigned to Company A 9th Infantry Regiment and was awarded and entitled to wear the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Ribbon; the National Defense Service Medal; and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. A man of excellent character, PFC Sommer's "Honorable Discharge" is a testimonial of honest and faithful service to his country during the Korean Conflict.
Those left to mourn the passing of George include: one daughter and son-in-law, Victoria "Vickie" and Richard A. Heidle, Dixon; one son, David Sommer, Jefferson City; four grandchildren, Terra Lance Heidle, Richard Marvin Heidle, Sommer Marie Heidle and Aubreigh Rose Sommer; three great-grandchildren, Richard Ethan, Wyatt Preston and Aleksa Marie; one sister, Maletta Sears, Dixon; nephews, nieces; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held for George from 5 – 7 p.m., Friday, May 16, 2014 and from 9-11 a.m., Saturday, May 17, 2014, all in the Long-Kloeppel Funeral Chapel, Dixon.
Funeral services for George will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 17, 2014, in the Long-Kloeppel Funeral Chapel, Dixon, with Pastor Helen Winters, Seaton Faith Fellowship Church, Dixon and Pastor Don Arthur, Apostolic Faith Church, Jerome officiating. Interment with full military honors will be in the Warnol Family Cemetery near Dixon.
