Aviator, Motion Picture Director, Screenwriter. He was born in Norway, the grandson of Nobel Prize-winning authors Henrik Ibsen and Bjornstjerne Bjornson, and started his career in the Army's Air Force where he trained to be a pilot. After World War I he grew disenchanted with his military career, so in January 1920, with financial help from his uncle, businessman Einar Bjørnson, he started Norway's first commercial airline, A/S Aero. He was its only pilot for all its early flights. The company was very successful, but Ibsen's wife, actress Lillibel Ibsen, begged him to stop flying. This along with his restlessness led him to sell A/S Aero to A/S Norske Aeroplanfabrik in 1923. While visiting New York he became interested in films after he saw "Orphans of the Storm" by D.W. Griffith. To learn more about films he went to Hollywood, where he ended up as an electrician on the set of "Tower of Lies" directed by Vicor Sjöström. He was later promoted to handyman on the set of King Vidor's film "His Hour". By 1924 he was part of the script department at MGM. He returned to Norway and wrote a number of articles on film to gain support. By 1927, he collaborated with George Schnéevoigt and created a long documentary called the "Norway Movie". In 1931, he made his debut with a feature film called "Den stor barnedåpen", which is considered to be Norway's first sound film and since has become a classic. The 1930s were his most productive, where he directed a number of feature films in Norway and Sweden. His other credits "Men with Brooms" (1933), "Synnøve Solbakken", (1934), "Op med hodet", (1934, his wife Lillebil Ibsen starred in this film), "Gjest Baardsen" (1939), "Tørres Snørteland" (1940), "The Private Apartment" (1948), "Thursday suspicious people" (1950), "Friends" (1960), and "Vildanden" (1963).
