Civil War Union Brigadier General. Father-in-law of Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan. Although he was a Mexican War combat veteran, his entire Civil War service was as a staff officer. He served as his son-in-law's chief-of-staff during General McClellan's tenure as commander of the Army of the Potomac, and during inspection duties in various military districts. He was appointed Inspector General of the US Army in 1872.
