Lance Corporal
3 Military Intelligence Battalion
British Army
He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
LCpl Thomas was one of five British service personnel killed in the crash of a Lynx MK9A helicopter in the Takhta Pul district of Kandahar, southern Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation and early reports indicate it was an accident due to catastrophic mechanical failure.
Aged 26, he was born in Brecon and grew up in the Kington area of Herefordshire. He joined the Army Reserve in June 2011, and after moving to London he joined 3 Military Intelligence Battalion in July 2012. Volunteering for deployment, he arrived in Afghanistan in December 2013. He was remembered as a young, enthusiastic and highly capable Intelligence Corps soldier. His officer commanding said, "LCpl Oli Thomas was the embodiment of his generation: bright, gifted, with an enquiring mind, and laser-focused on the task in hand. The bonus for us was that he was also blessed with a natural flair and the happy knack of always being able to raise a smile with his keen sense of wit."
LCpl Thomas leaves behind his parents Clive and Joanna, sister Polly, partner Laura McLeod, other family members and many friends. His family said, "Oliver was a truly amazing person, living his life to the full, while fulfilling some of his many dreams and adventures. He was very much loved and will be greatly missed by his grieving family and friends."
A private funeral was held on May 16 at Hereford Crematorium with a memorial service at St Mary's Church, Kington on May 17, 2014.
