His family is referred to as the "Chester Croots" by descendants of his brothers.
All but one of his siblings immigrated to the US settling variously in New York City, New Jersey, and Iowa.
He is in the 1841 UK Census with his parents in Howton, Moretonhampstead and in the 1851 Census as a worker at Northmore Farm, Moretonhamptead. It of note that one of the other workers was George Walling but the relationship is not clear.
He married Susan Walling in 1859 in New Jersey and they had:
* Susan W. b. 1860
* John R. b. 1861
* George H. b. 1865
* Joseph W. b. 1867
* William J. b. 1874
After Susan's death, he married her sister Maria Walling in 1885 and they had:
* Samuel C. b. 1886
He died in 1907.
Three of his sons, John, George, and William, moved to Iowa as had two of his brothers.
From "Chester, NJ: A Scrapbook of History," 1974:
"Joseph Croot came to Chester from England at the age of nineteen. He worked at Luther Child's on Pottersville Road (now the Chubb Farm) and before long--in 1859--"sent for his sweetheart and married her." He then rented the present Mennen "Hideaway Farm." eventually he owned the present "Black River Farm" on the east side of the river at Hacklebarney. Their son, Joseph W., attended the Chester Institute, grew up and married, and in 1889 bought the Van Doren farm on the Mendham road. His son, John Van Doren Croot, was soon born there; he is a respected citizen of Chester today."
