Private, Company M, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. He was the last soldier to die from wounds received at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

A native of Berne, Switzerland, he enlisted on September 23, 1875, at age 27, in Louisville, Kentucky, giving his previous occupation as Laborer. He had hazel eyes, fair hair, a fair complexion, and was 5 feet, 6 1/4 inches tall. At the beginning of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, his company was assigned to Reno's column, and he made the initial attack into the valley. Retreating with Reno's unit back up to Reno Hill, he was wounded in the left hip and grazed on his left cheek. He survived the battle, and along with other seriously wounded men, was evacuated aboard the steamer "Far West" back to Fort Abraham Lincoln, North Dakota, where he died in the hospital.
