Leon Caraway graduated from Vanderbilt and was practicing law when he was first mustered into the First Regiment Tennessee Infantry as a first lieutenant. He was promoted to the rank of captain in the Spanish-American War. He resigned his job as postmaster at Big Sandy, Tennessee to organize Battery D. company when America entered World War I.

When Leon could no longer serve his country due to his age and health his unit was taken over by Lt. Gordon Browning, who later was elected as the governor of Tennessee.
