Mary Jane Carbone
December 20, 1923 - January 17, 2014
After celebrating her 90th birthday on December 20, 2013, Mary Carbone, our mother, passed away in her sleep January 17, 2014. Born in San Francisco to the Walsh family, a twin and youngest of 8, she moved to San Anselmo when she was young. Mom developed her love of gardening at the family home on Barber Avenue. She walked to St Anselm's grammar school and graduated from St Anselm's High School. Mom worked as a bookkeeper in San Anselmo where she met Roy Carbone, also of San Anselmo, who worked for the IRS. They enjoyed tennis and hiking, and married in 1947. Mom and Dad had 9 children: Joanne Mason (Larry), Mark (Grisel), Jack (Chris), Janet Ford (Jeff), Mary Ellen Jenkins (Rob), Sue Young (Brian), Carolyn Stone (Bill), Barbara Carbone (Gregg Lyman) and Paula Loeffler (Bill) - all Marin Catholic graduates. She was the proud "Grammy" of 18 and had 1 great grandson – with two due shortly.
Mom and Dad enjoyed our large family and our many family gatherings. They loved sports including the Giants, Niners and their children's and grandchildren's games. They always found time for tennis until shortly before Roy passed away in 1985. While caring for Dad, Mom continued to work at Macy's (aka "the Big E") and to play on a local tennis team. A good, Irish Catholic, Mom made many close friends and kept very busy with her Blessed Sacrament Church group, Hawthorne Way and North Bridge neighbors, and her tennis teams. As the children moved out, Mom began to travel and would think nothing of hopping into her car for a long ride to Yosemite for lunch, or to visit one of her children or grandchildren. One of Mom's fondest memories was traveling alone to the Australian Open. She also went to the US Open in New York. Mom was fortunate to share her home with Dad's sister, Elaine Regalia, for many fun-filled years and appreciated her companionship.
Mom spent her final years at the Nazareth House where she previously volunteered and had many friends. She loved the weekly Wii bowling and bocce ball matches, especially when she won, which "Marvelous Mary Carbone" did often. Mom stayed at the Nazareth House until her passing. We are very appreciative of the care, love and friendship she received from her friends and the staff there. Mom lived life to its fullest and taught us all to do the same. Her zest for life is embedded forever in our family and will live on in all those she touched. We hope to emulate her nonjudgmental openness to others and acceptance of life's realities, as well as her strong work ethic, energy, and ability to have a darn good time.
