Major League Baseball Player. He had a long amateur and professional baseball career in his native Cuba, and won 3 gold medals at the Baseball World Cup in 1939, 1940, and 1942. He had a standout amateur season in 1942, going 22-5 with a 1.22 earned run average. While in the Cuban League, he pitched for Oriente, Almendares, and Mariano from 1946 to 1958, winning 69 games, and 3 league championships. Marrero signed with the Washington Senators in 1947. From 1947 to 1949, he pitched for the Havana Cubans of the minor leagues, and won 20 or more games each season. He made his major league debut on April 21, 1950 against the New York Yankees. He was an American League All-Star in 1951, and threw a one-hitter on April 26, 1951. with a record of 11-9, and finished 34th in the MVP balloting in 1952. He pitched for Washington until 1954, and later played for the Cubans again from 1955 to 1957. Marrero was the oldest former Major League Baseball player at the time of his death at the age of 102.
