Blues Musician. Born James Moore in Lobdel, Louisiana, he dropped out of school to work as a longshoreman and play the harmonica in area nightclubs and bars in order to help support his orphaned siblings. He performed under the name "Harmonica Slim". In the mid 1950's he was introduced to a man in the record business and in 1957 he released his first record under his new stage name "Slim Harpo". The record was a double sided hit with the songs "I'm the King Bee" and "I've Got Love If You Want It". He signed to record with Excello Records and by 1961 he had a hit with the Billboard Top 40 song "Rainin' in my Heart". Other hits included "Buzzin", "I Love the Life I Live" and "Little Queen Bee". In 1966 he had his biggest hit with "Baby, Scratch my Back". The number one R and B hit made an appearance on the Billboard Top 20 pop chart. His fame increased when groups like 'The Rolling Stones' and 'The Yardbirds' began to record some of his songs. In 1970, he was experiencing a resurrection in his career with a tour to Europe. His re-emergence was cut short when he succumbed to a heart attack.
