Son of David and Rebecca, nee McFadden, Foster. William married Sarah Ann Charlotte Murphy on December 29, 1842 in Clark County, Missouri. Sarah Foster also survived the terrible winter, but their infant son, Jeremiah George Foster, perished in the tragedy at Donner Lake along with her mother and two brothers.
Sarah and William later had six more children: Alice E. Foster, Georgiana C. Foster, William Budd Foster, Minnesota "Minnie" Foster Markle, Harriet "Hattie" Foster and Frances S. Foster.
Two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law also survived: Meriam Marjory "Mary" Murphy, William Green Murphy, Simon Peter Murphy and Harriet Frances Murphy Pike Nye.
