Geographer. A Missouri native, Sauer graduated from the former Central Wesleyan College of Warrenton in 1908 and received his Ph. D in Geography from the University of Chicago in 1915. Shortly afterwards he began teaching geography at the University of Michigan. In 1923 he went to the University of California Berkeley where he served as Chairman of the Department of Geography until 1954. Establishing himself as one of the most influential geographers of his time, he is best remembered for works such as his 1925 essay "The Morphology of Landscape," and the 1952 book "Agricultural Origins and Dispersals." He retired as professor emeritus in 1957.
