Irene Raab Epstein was born in Sátoraliaujhel¡ Hungary, in 1923. She worked as a nurse in the Jewish hospital there until she and her family were deported in May 1944.

She spent the rest of 1944 and the first half of 1945 in Nazi camps, Ausschwitz-Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen and then spent a year in Sweden, in a tuberculosis sanitarium, first as a patient and then as a nurse's aide. She came to the United States in August 1946, and in 1974 she earned a Ph.D. in history from lndiana University. Her doctoral dissertation, Gyula Szekfù: The Political Basis of Hungarian Historiography was published in 1987.
