Mary Katherine Klyman Acton, 84, died Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at Arbor Acres Retirement Community. She was born on January 30, 1926 in Raleigh, N. C. to Helena Danieley and Harry H. Klyman. She graduated from Needham Broughton High School; St. Mary’s College in Raleigh and attended N. C. State University. She worked for a brief time for Postmaster Staton Inscoe before leaving the workforce to raise her family. She re-entered the work force in 1972 at WRAL-TV as the secretary to the news director Sam Beard. There she worked along side her special and dear friends Billie Krisulewicz, Scottie Stevenson and Aubrey Moore as well as countless others whose lives were touched by her professionalism and her wonderful sense of humor. Katherine was an avid bridge player. In 1977 she and her long time bridge partner and special friend Cis Chester achieved the distinction of Life Master. Another interest of hers was Ikebana flower arranging for which she won several tri-color ribbons. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Kent D. Klyman and her grandson Edward Kent Welch. She is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, William (Bill) Daniel Acton of Arbor Acres, her daughter Kathy Acton (and husband Jerry Smith) of Winston-Salem, her son William D. (Bill) Acton, Jr. (and wife Phyllis Clough) of Charlotte, NC., her sister Nell K. Harand (and husband Joe) of Shelby, N. C., her grandchildren Ashley Walker (and husband Doug) of Raleigh, Maj. (Sel) Stewart Welch (and wife Elizabeth Joseph) of Travis AFB, CA., Katie Welch of Raleigh, Jennifer Acton of Los Angeles, CA., and Leslie Acton of Carrboro, nephew Sandy Acton (and wife Anita) of Raleigh, nieces Dian H. Smith (and husband Jerry) of Winston-Salem, Lynn Hankins (and husband Jack) of Charlotte, Susan Young (and husband Bill) of Shelby, nephew Kyle Klyman (and wife Katherine) of Williamsburg, Va., and great-grandchildren Wells Walker, Lydia Welch, Rayne Walker and Will Welch, as well as many great nieces and nephews and four great-great nieces. A memorial service will be held in the Goodson Fellowship Hall at Arbor Acres on Saturday, May 15 at 10:30 am followed by a graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh at 3:00pm. The family wishes to thank the staff of Arbor Acres and especially the Memory Care Unit nurses and caregivers for the incredible care, love and support shown to Katherine and our entire family during the past five years.
