He served at this rank for the next two years until September 1, 1864, when he was promoted to Captain, filling the command vacancy caused when Captain Henry J. Conine was killed in action at the July 9, 1862 Battle of Monocacy, Maryland. He led his company through the end of the war and was honorably mustered out June 18, 1865.
He was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers, on April 2, 1865 for “for gallant and meritorious services before Petersburg, Va.”.
