Hawera & Normanby Star, 29 August 1900
The sudden and unexpected illness of Mr H. Fitch came as a shock to his many friends. From what I can gather he got a chill while working in the rain on Wednesday afternoon, which resulted in inflammation of he base of the brain. Drs. Leatham and Harrison have been in attendance.

FITCH - At his late residence, Eltham, on Thursday, August 39th, 1900, after a short and painful illness, Harry, second son of J. S. Fitch, of Waihi; aged 37 years.

Hawera & Normanby Star, 30 August 1900
It is with extreme regret that I have to record the death of mr harry Fitch, which took place at an early hour this morning, after a very short illness. He was a gentleman of quiet and unassuming manners, with a smile and pleasant word for everybody on all occasions - a thoroughly upright and conscientious man. In business he enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who had dealings with him. His loss will be seriously felt for a long time. He leaves a wife and six little children to mourn their loss, for whom great sympathy is felt

Hawera & Normanby Star, 3 September 1900
The funeral cortege of the late Mr H. Fitch was the largest ever seen in Eltham. The hearse left deceased's late residence at 2 p.m. on Sunday, for the Masonic Hall, where the usual Masonic ceremony was held (the deceased being a member of that Order)
The procession moved from the hall at 2.30 for the ceremony, headed by member of the Masonic lodge, including visiting brothers from Hawera and Stratford.
Bro. Holmes, carrying an open sword took the lead, then two brethren with white wands with white ribbon attached, the brethren following, and then the officers of the lodge in regalia, and P. M. Calvert carrying the Bible, followed by W.M. Bro. Dean.
Then came the hearse, followed by the chief mourners, the family of deceased including his father and brothers.
Then followed a large number of people on foot, about 35 vehicles and 60 horsemen. Altogether about 400 people followed.
The pall-bearers were Bros. Page, Syme, Baber and Kleine.
Arriving at the cemetery, Mr McDonald conducted the burial service after which P.M. Bro. J. K. Ferguson read the Masonic burial service.
The officiating clergyman and P.M. Bro. Ferguson each gave very ipressive addresses.
The wreaths were many and beautiful. Two especially handsome ones were sent by the Masonic Lodge and the School Committee.
Friends from Hawera, Stratford, Kaponga and Mangatoki were present.
