We regret to record the death of Mr J. W. Mills, of Hawera, formerly of Eltham, nurseryman. He contracted a cold a short time ago, and pneumonia supervened. For a day or two his condition has been most critical and he succumbed this morning.

Hawera & Normanby Star, 4 August 1900
The funeral of the late Mr J. W. Mills took place at Eltham yesterday. The body was taken up from Hawera in the 2.10 train, and was met at the Eltham railway station by a very large assemblage.
The order of the funeral cortege was:-
The Oddfellows (including brothers from the Hawera lodge), the Snowflakes Temperance Lodge (both lodges in regalia), mourners on foot, and a very large number in traps and on horses. The Rev J. Dukes conducted the fineral service, P.P.G.M. Bro. F. Squire read the Oddfellows' burial service, and Bro. Mackie the service of the temperance lodge. P. G. Bros. M. J. Campbell, J. Parkin, F.
