Comedian. Born in Brighton, he first appeared on the variety stage in the 1920's, and was soon teamed with Bud Flanagan both on stage and on film. In 1931, they joined Jimmy Nervo, Teddy Knox, Charlie Naughton and Jimmy Gold to form the “Crazy Gang”. In addition to their hugely successful stage appearances, the six made five films together, the best regarded of which is probably "The Frozen Limits" (1939), which was described by Graham Greene as "the funniest English picture yet produced." Chesney Allen retired early, in the 1950s, due to health problems, although the Gang continued until 1962, his roles being taken by Eddie Gray, who had often appeared with them. Ironically, Chesney was to outlive all the other members, and remained popular as a guest on television chat shows. He died at Midhurst in Sussex, was cremated at Chichester, and is commemorated there by a plaque on Wall "L".
