Born Kommer van Essen in Brandwijk, Zuid-Holland, Holland. Son of Marinus van Essen and Willemijntje Pols. At the age of 19 he married Christina Jacoba Tas on March 23, 1876 in Molenaarsgraaf, Zuid-Holland, Holland. They had 14 children with five sons living to adulthood, Marinus, Pieter, Adrianus J. (Adrian Jacob), Meindus (Meindert) Christiaan, and Kommer (Commer). His wife Christina passed away on January 14, 1901 in Brandwijk. Commer and sons Adrianus, Meindus, and Commer immigrated to America arriving at Ellis Island on April 25, 1907. They resided in Grand Rapids, Michigan where Commer continued in his profession as a baker. He married again on March 8, 1910 to Tjitske De Roos Postema in Grand Rapids.
